From Vision to Reality: The Journey of The European Homestay

At The European Homestay, hospitality isn’t just a business—it’s a deeply personal mission led by our founder, Amitava Majumdar, a lifelong entrepreneur with a passion for building things from the ground up.

From his early days persuading mentors to entrust him with fledgling ventures, Amitava has always thrived in new beginnings.

At 30, he became Project Manager for Sesa Seat Information Systems Ltd, an Indo-Italian tech venture under IRI Finsider. Leading major government and telecom contracts, he quickly rose to become its CEO.

Driven by the thrill of building something from scratch, he moved into livestock farming and food processing with Kapitan, a homegrown poultry brand that became a market leader in Western India. After 15 successful years, he pivoted again — this time back to finance—creating a UK-India accounting services bridge that served British accountants through teams in Mumbai.

His journey then led to Goa, where he founded Bespoke Academic Research, supporting UK and European students from the tranquil backdrop of India’s western coast. His contributions to research even earned him a PhD offer and a visiting lectureship in business strategy from Oxford Brookes University — an opportunity he graciously declined to continue building his life and dreams in Goa.

Inspired by his experiences in Europe’s best homestays, and driven by a deep appreciation for Goa’s charm, Amitava launched The European Homestay — a brand that brings together Goan warmth and European-style comfort, with a focus on sparkling cleanliness, operational excellence, and guest delight.

Our Team

We’re a close-knit team handling housekeeping, customer service, operations, marketing, and general management. Our housekeeping staff are our stars—ensuring daily cleaning, pristine rooms, and responsive service 24/7. Our marketing team engages with key booking portals—Booking.com, Airbnb, VRBO, and Agoda—to keep the properties visible and booked.

  • 24/7 self-check-in is enabled with digital lock boxes—making arrival smooth, even at odd hours.

Whether it’s arranging scooters, curating local experiences, or providing medical assistance in emergencies—we’re there. From caring for sick children of guests at night, to supporting elderly visitors with special needs, we ensure every guest feels safe, valued, and cared for.

Our SOPs include over 50 guest-focused processes, from early check-ins and personalised gifts to services rarely seen in homestays at this price point.

Community & Impact

Our workforce reflects India’s diversity. All core team members are young Goans from various communities. Recognising Goa’s labour shortages, we also recruit committed housekeeping staff from Chhattisgarh, offering fair wages and benefits well above industry norms.

As a founder, Amitava personally connects with every guest. Whether sharing a bottle of local port or simply checking in to say hello, he finds joy in building relationships with travellers from across India and around the globe — from Denmark and Russia to Japan and Israel.

Milestones That Matter

June 2023

The idea for a homestay brand with a European touch was born.

A driven, diverse team was assembled — two women and one man, all postgraduates with management or engineering backgrounds.

Sept 2023

Within three months, we had acquired and developed two villas in Candolim and leased four riverfront apartments in Siolim near Uddo Beach.

Nov 2023

We launched operations just in time for the season — focused on cleanliness, quality, and value.

Our hospitality offerings included thoughtful extras: complimentary breakfasts, Goan port wine, savoury snacks, and responsive service.

Nov 2024

Within 12 months, we earned:
